"Do you know when you'll be interviewing the band?" a text arrives. "I wanted to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's fourth member. What's more, we are far from alone. Multiple celebrated fans have also coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious an irresistible appeal is at play. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Presently, they stand as multi-time Grammy Award hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos frequently depict them striding in sync down the streets of Los Angeles. During performances, they play with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"How often on tour that audience members told us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can inspire young girls to make music."

Award Nod

The group are connecting from home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in for their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in consideration for the prize.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We really set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge achievement," says Alana. "Yet we're just appreciative for the women that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The record came out of a phase of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music inhabits that unique transitional period where you're relieved to be free, but not yet ready to let go.

The words detail endings and partings. The sisters seek love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on ignoring the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That newfound resilience required a different sonic direction – more organic and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a specific thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our book," jokes Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The band's honesty shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a friendly slap at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global fan base.

However the band will consistently be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
