Whenever a significant honors show draws close, one notices an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Which classification works between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition completely in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
