The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"It's positive. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a key capacity. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
